ICU Communication Board

A tap-to-talk board for patients who can't speak.

Born from the need to support a loved one battling Guillain-Barré syndrome, this board gives a ventilated patient a fast way to say what comes up all day: seven color-coded groups of large, plain phrases, from “I can't breathe” to “Please hold my hand”.

  • Urgent needs sit first and in red, so help is one tap away.
  • Large type and generous spacing for tired eyes and limited movement.
  • Nothing to install and no accounts: open a link and tap.
  • Covers medicine, comfort, feelings, questions for the care team and requests for family.
  • One file of code, easy for any family or hospital to adapt.
The communication board on a phone: color-coded categories and large phrases

Where it came from

When a loved one was in intensive care with Guillain-Barré syndrome, on a ventilator and unable to speak, spelling words out on a letter board was slow and exhausting for everyone in the room. The need was simple: a faster way to be understood.

What we built

A single-screen board. Categories across the top, color-coded by urgency; big phrases below. Tap a category, point at a phrase. It runs in a browser on whatever device is on the bedside table.

What mattered

The phrases, not the code. Breathing and pain first. Then medicine, comfort, feelings, questions for the care team, and things to ask of family. Every line is something a patient actually needs to say, written in their own voice.

What's next

It's free and open source. If a hospital or a family wants to adapt it, the whole app is one file, and we're glad to help.
